What is the very first thing you do to kick off the season? Is it a specific candle you light, a coffee order, or finally dragging the boxes out of the attic?

The very first thing we usually do is have a spooky movie marathon, eating spooky snacks, while having some halloween-themed scented wax melts (that I make) melting filling the house with the smell of Halloween/Fall! 🍁🎃✨

the first Saturday of October each year in my hometown finds a "fall festival" (generally and not necessarily Halloween in nature in and of itself) on the town square. that evening, the local county historical society and county museum has a fund raiser event at the town's old cemetery (that dates back to 1800-1810 around the time the town was founded) where people in period dress portray actual people buried there with a 5-10 minute "speech" in character about their life based on historical documents, journals, diaries, etc. It's a great way to support the local history entities and get a little spooky at the same time :)

While we "officially " start our spooky season right after Labor Day, come October we always do a haunted house the first weekend.

For me, October 1st is about stepping outside and breathing in that crisp, earthy air, feeling the first real chill. It's when the veil feels thinnest, just by the scent of the turning leaves.
