The other day I saw a Facebook post that, unfortunately, had been made in bad-faith but could have been a genuinely good conversation. The post asked for everyone’s favorite strong female character in a horror movie available to watch on Tubi.

So here is a legitimate answer.

5. Carmilla in The Vampire Lovers. The Vampire Lovers is a Hammer Horror movie from 1970 and it is a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the 1870s lesbian vampire novel, Carmilla. Try to imagine if Dracula was a young woman and could turn into a cat instead of a bat. (Yes, I’m aware that Hammer’s Dracula usually was not depicted taking bat form but I meant in the usual perception of Dracula).

4. Marie – Innocent Blood (Available in other countries as A French Vampire in America). This 90s vampire movie Is about a vampire who preys on evil doers. When a mob boss she fed on accidentally comes back as a vampire, she and a cop must team up to stop a new batch of unsavory vampires.

3. Rhonda – Trick ‘r Treat. Rhonda is portrayed as neurodivergent little girl who is hyper-fixated on Halloween. When some bullies pull a mean prank on her, the spirits of some murdered children, influenced by Sam (The Spirit of Halloween) take revenge on her behalf.

2. Laurie – Trick ‘r Treat. Laurie seems to be an innocent who is nervous about her “first time” however it turns out that she and her friends are part of a werewolf pack and she’s actually out to make her first kill, under the supervision of Sam (The spirit of Halloween) of course.

1. Evie in The Invitation (2022) film). In Sony Pictures’ The Invitation, Evie is a young artist who recently lost her mother so she decides to take a DNA test and finds she has an extended family in England. The extended family are all secretly minion of Dracula and he is looking for a new bride. I liked this one because though Evie is still traditionally feminine, she can hold her own against Dracula, and turns the tables at him and his minion.

Honorable mentions:

Rosaleen in The Company of Wolves. – Not your typical little Red Riding-hood Story. The entire movie is set in the mind of a dreaming pubescent girl. Werewolves become the metaphors for puberty, masculinity, and sexuality.

Miriam Blaylock in The Hunger. - Miriam never perfected her method of making new vampires. Her lovers always eventually deteriorate. And now she’s after Dr. Sarah Roberts.

Elizabeta – Monster Mash – Captured by Dr. Frankenstein, Elizabeta befriends his creation.

Mina – Bram Stoker’s Dracula – It’s love that redeems the monster.

Carrie – 1976, 2002, and 2013 versions. I actually have a soft spot for 2002 Carrie because she actually lives at the end of that one. I know it deviates from the book but I liked it.

Belle in Beauty and the Beast AKA La Belle et la Bête (2014 French film). – So how would you react if you were the reincarnation of a magical creature that had been accidentally murdered by her incompetent prince of a husband? And now you find him in your next life, and he’s been cursed by your Elemental God father, to be a beast because of your murder? (This one has some beautiful visuals, far superior to Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast).

And three final mentions for movies that used to be on Tubi and are likely to come back to Tubi:

Sarah in The Craft.

“The Mermaid Queen” in She-Creature (2001 film). - When a live mermaid is captured by Carnies who plan to transport her across the ocean, she picks off her captors, one by one, sparing just the woman on board.

Eva in The Bride. – The 1985 filn (not the recent one) is a loose sequel to Bride of Frankenstein and the female creature (who has a psychic / empathic link to the first creature) is groomed to be “as bold and as interesting” as a man but Barron Frankenstein soon comes to resent what he can’t control.

I love the final girls who outsmart the monsters, they're like finding a full-size candy bar on Halloween. Always makes for a top-tier watch!

Final girls are the unsung heroines of horror, just like how witches in folklore often turned the tables on their oppressors. Love how they empower viewers even on Tubi! 🎃
