We’re in for a magical-overlap for those who believe in such things.
Tonight is Walpurgisnacht. The medieval German spring festival roughly half-way to All Hallow’s Eve / Samhain. It’s a night when witches are supposed to have carnivals and trade and sell spells, potions, trickets, and charms, throw parties, have dances, and cavort with goblins, dark fae, and the like. The supernatural and things things that go bump in the night roam free. It’s a time when the veil between worlds is thin, much like a spring equivalent to Samhain.
Walpurgisnacht is mentioned in Goethe’s Faust Parts 1 and 2, and in the short story Dracula’s Guest by Bram Stoker (considered to be the lost chapter of Dracula).
According to legend, if you see a blue-flamed fire on Walpurgisnacht it’s burning over where a supernatural entity (Likely a vampire) buried their treasure. A fluke snow storm on Walpurgisnacht (April 30th ) is supposedly caused by a vampire seeking prey according to the story, Dracula’s Guest.
May 1st is the Gealic holiday of Beltane. Walpurgisnacht is the eve of Beltane the way Halloween (Also called All Hallows Eve) is the eve of All Saints Day on November 1st. (Hallow being an archaic word for blessed or Saint).
Beltane is a bonfire festival celebrating the warming weather and the rise of magical energy. It’s a time of celebration and appreciating nature. Today it is celebrated by many Neo Pagans such as Druids and Wiccans.
Now it just so happens that this year’s Beltane is a full moon night. That’s about as rare as a full moon on Halloween (Despite how common that appears in movies.) On Full Moon nights energies are already high. This is a time Wiccans and other Neo Pagan groups make Moon Water (a variation on blessed water) and cleans and charge their crystals.
The full moon is also a night when werewolves may roam. (Traditional folkloric werewolves could transform at will, not just during the full moon, but the full moon is still when the wolf-side is extra powerful).
Combine that with the rise of magical energy and supernatural entities roaming for Walpurgisnacht and you have a spring festival fit for a lycanthrope.
“Beware the moon. Stay on the road. Keep clear of the moors.”
May is already Dracula month. It’s the month the novel was published and when the novel starts as it’s a dated epistolary novel treated like letters and journal entries (The literary equivalent of found-footage horror movies). It’s also the birth month of horror icons, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Vincent Price.
And finally, this May 31st is also a full moon, a blue moon. So we have Walpurgisnacht, Beltane, (the half-way mark to Halloween and All Saints Day / Día de Muertos or Día de los Muertos), A full moon, a bunch of horror anniversaries / Birthdays, and a Blue Moon.
Enjoy the spooky moon magick.
Happy haunting! And pet your werewolf friends. They’re lonely.
