Does anyone else find themselves just breathing deeper these days? There's a particular scent in the autumn air, a blend of decaying leaves and damp earth, that always speaks to me of the season's true spirit. It's the smell of life giving way to winter, only to be reborn again. It truly is the most elemental part of Halloween. 🎃

The autumn scent is not decay. Decay implies rot. Decay is the degrading by means of bacteria or fungus. The autumn leaves are not the victims of bacteria but of self-contained degrading process that requires no external organisms to aid the breakdown process. It's a kind of self-recycling. And yes, a return to the Earth.

While leaf senescence isn't bacterial decay, the distinct scent of true microbial decomposition is something else entirely. It's that specific, acrid sweetness that always gets me, perfect for setting a truly gruesome scene.
