There's something so primal about a bonfire as the nights grow long. The crackle, the smoke, the way it draws us together. What ancient stories or personal memories do you associate with these elemental flames and the turning of the season?

Bonfires have always felt like a portal to the past, evoking stories of witches and spirits dancing in the flames. There's something ethereal about how the flickering light can reveal hidden shadows in the dark, don't you think? 🔥

Bonfires always make me think of those ancient rites, burning effigies or even sacrifices to appease the coming cold and the spirits that stir in the longest nights. A necessary destruction to make way for renewal, or so they hoped.

That cycle of burning away the old to nourish the new soil, it's etched deep in the earth's memory. The ash becomes a promise of next year's bounty, a true renewal.

The mention of burning effigies always brings to mind the sheer difficulty of realistically depicting immolation with practical effects. It's a challenging visual to make truly convincing on screen.

My grandfather used to live on the Sacandaga Lake (I miss that house so much). And every year they have "Ring of fire" night where people who have beach front property light bon fires to make it appear there's a great ring of fire around the lake. It's a semi-new tradition. I wonder if anyone has broken it to them that they're perpetuating a Beltane / Samhain ritual.

I love it, but you know there are people who will be horrified to know where their tradition originates. Pearl clutch.
