The Warrens did not make Paranormal investigation mainstream

Now that people are finally starting to realize that The Warrens were con artists, a lot of their fans are clinging to "But they made Paranormal investigation mainstream. You can at least thank them for that."

They did NOT bring Paranormal investigation to the mainstream. Why do their fans keep claiming this? Are you really so unaware of others before them? To me it's as infuriating as if someone in 2030 starts claiming Ghost Adventures was the first.

Here.

1. There'a famous novel about paranormal investigation from 1971 by Richard Mattheson called Hell House. It was published in 1971 and made into a movie with Roddy McDowall a few years later (Legend of Hell House).

2. The pre-movies version of The Ghostbusters was also the seventies.

3. Paranormal investigation was very popular in the late nineteenth century and brought about the founding of the SPR (Society for Psychical research). The SPR coined the term parapsychology in the hope that it would enable psychical research to be taken more seriously. And it did help. Many investigation techniques still used today were pioneered at Duke University in the mid-twentieth century.

4. The Philip Experiment was conducted in Canada in the 1970s. This was a famous experiment to see if a ghost or ghost-like entity could be manifested by inventing a ghost persona and setting an atmosphere in the hope of inducing psychokinetic phenomena spawned from the belief alone.

5. Ed Warren didn't call himself a Demonologist until the concept was already trendy thanks to the movie The Exorcist. The only thing he helped make mainstream was fanning the flames of the Satanic Panic and demonizing non-Christians- particularly Pagans. They also spread the notion that Ouija boards are evil, which has annoyingly lingered and diminished cultural awareness of the Ideomotor effect. (The cause of most Ouija board phenomena). The Exorcist may have started it but they perpetuated it and got lots of gullible people to harass their kids about slumber parties if Ouija boards were present.

6. Does no one remember that Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle investigated claims of psychic phenomena for years? This was long before the Warrens. Doyle was the believer, Houdini the skeptic. Doyle even fell for a hoax conducted by two little girls who claimed to have seen fairies.

7. Trusting The Warrens nearly ruined the career of a well-established Dr. Hans Holzer, who was already established in the Paranormal community before the Warrens.

8. The nineteenth century Spiritualist and Occult movements had a revival in the late 1950s and carried through to the 70s. It's referenced in the movies House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting and the original William Castle version of The 13 Ghosts.

9. Long before the Conjuring or even Ghost Hunters we had TV shows like Sightings, "Mysteries, Magic, and Miracles", "in Search of...", Haunted History, and Unsolved Mysteries.

10. Paranormal Investigators (which were rising in popularity at the time) inspired the movie Night Stalker and spin-off TV show Kolchak the Night Stalker. This was long before The Warrens ever had a movie or even the Amityville case.

11. The 1971 movie Night of Dark Shadows (Though inspired by a 60s Soap Opera) was heavily influenced by Paranormal investigations and "True story" Haunting TV movies and documentaries that were popular at the time.

12. Even the TV show Dark Shadows (1966) featured a Paranormal Investigator character, a professor of Parapsychology named Professor Stokers, who replaced a previous similar character Dr. Julia Hoffman (who though still on the show was now an ally of the vampire character, Barnabas Collins). Introducing the supernatural saved the struggling Gothic Soap Opera. That's how popular it was in the mid-60s, long before The Warrens were a household name.
