The real Ghostbusters will be on Tubi on July 15th!

This spooky season has an early treat. For Halloween collectors July 5th is the start of Spooky Season. That is the date a lot of stores start putting out their Halloween merchandise (and annoyingly a lot of it is gone before September is even here). It’s harvest time for us Halloween lovers.

This year we get an extra July treat. On July 15th The Real Ghostbusters animated series will be available to stream for free on Tubi if you are in the US (Or if you have a VPN that makes it appear as if you are in the US).

The Real Ghostbusters animated series is the TV series tie-in to the first (and later also the second) Ghostbusters movie. The words “The real” are in the title because funimation had its own Ghostbusters animated series based on an older unrelated TV series involving a monkey for some reason.

In an era when most Saturday morning cartoons lasted one or two years and then lived on in rerun, The Real Ghostbusters animated series ran for five and a half (nearly six) years and even had a prime time Halloween special.

I was four-years-old when The Real Ghostbusters animated series first aired and I was watching it before I saw the movies. When I was about nine I saw Ghostbusters 2 and found I liked it a lot more than the first one (In my defense I was nine). My grandfather taped it for me and I had the second film almost entirely memorized.

Egon was my favorite character and it was from Ghostbusters that I learned about the science (or pseudoscience / Esoteric science) of parapsychology and decided that I wanted to study parapsychology academically. Unable to find (or afford) university degrees specific to the subject, I ended up taking a vocational course with SCI (Stratford Career Institute). In 2008 I achieved a goal created from a childhood cartoon series.

This cartoon was a major influence for me, except for the episode with the robot. That one is pretty dated. One line that makes me laugh in that one is when Ray gets excited to find out that Robobuster had 20 MB of memory. Isn’t that cute? He had enough MB for about a short music CD’s worth of very compressed songs, and that’s being generous.

My favorite episode is Transylvania Homesick Blues, which feels loosely inspired by Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula book series, where a misunderstood vampire is actually the protagonist of the story, calling upon the Ghostbusters for help. My second favorite episode of The Real Ghostbusters is The Halloween Door, and also X-mas marks the spot. The Christmas episode was a fun twist on the tired revamping of A Christmas Carol.

This year happens to be the 40th anniversary of The Real Ghostbusters animated series and now it will be available to watch for free.
