I saw a post in a Paranormal group on Facebook recently that read “If you’re doing a haunted house investigation? Do you spiritually protect yourself first?” And to my astonishment (and second-hand embarrassment) there was a flood of responses of “Yes!” And “Yes, before AND after!”
Here’s the thing… These sort of responses seem to reveal to me who studied Parapsychology academically and who learned about paranormal Investigation from TV shows, movies, or worse, The Warrens…
I have nothing against wanting to have some spiritual protection when you do paranormal investigation. That’s your personal choice and prerogative. BUT when you’re investigating a possible haunting I have been taught, quite thoroughly, that you should do nothing in front of the client that seems to affirm their pre-established beliefs. If you want to spiritually protect yourself, you do it discretely, privately. You do not make a show of it, you do not act theatrically about it and you do not make a grand demand that everyone do the same.
Paranormal investigation is not like in the movies or even TV. It’s often very boring and quiet. Even if you do get some signs of haunting, the chances of you being “spiritually assaulted” or harmed in any way are very slim to non-existent. Also you should never assume any investigation is definitely a haunting and espeically, you should not automatically behave as if it is probably malevolent and harmful.
If you enter an investigation with a grand show of “Spiritual defense” you compromise the integrity of the investigation. You diminish all pretense of a sincere and unbias investigation. You look as if you already believe it is definitely haunted and definitely evil. This bias compromises the investigation and the mood for all parties involved.
You are not in The Conjuring. The Warrens were never spiritual heroes and warriors. They were con artists and most legitimate paranormal researchers knew this for decades. You are likely not going to run into Satan, himself, in a two-bedroom ranch house next to a 7-11. Even if you do encounter something sinister, usually the worst they can do is give you a sense of dread, and maybe knock-over a vase. It’s not like the movies.
Yes, if you want to spiritually protect yourself, do so. But do not pretend you are on Ghost Adventures. You are not The Frog Brothers about to take on teen vampires. Do not make a grand shw of it. Don’t taint or compromise the seriousness of the investigation with a Hollywood-inspired bias of presumed demons. Be mature and professional.
