I just got done watching the first three episodes of President Curtis. And though it is a spin-off of Rick and Morty you do not have been well-versed in Rick and Morty Lore to follow it.
The premise is the president of the US also deals with monsters. Consider it the supernatural / fantasy equivalent of Rick and Morty’s scifi. There are so many delightful references, from Dracula and The Faun (From Pan’s Labyrinth) being in “The Triangle” (monster prison) to Candyman having a redemption. President Curtis has two sidekicks. The first is O’Doyle, a half-leprechaun (human sized) who cannot lie, and Roe Banks, a cyborg.
I originally watched for Keith David since he voice’s President Curtis and I’m a fan of his work. To my delight the second and third episode feature his character singing in the shower on the end credits, a bit off-key (deliberately because that man is a good singer) but still funny. I’m really enjoying it so far. It feels cynical but there’s an undercurrent of humanity in the characters that makes it palatable.
One thing I really like is Kristen Shaal (Louise from Bob’s Burgers and Delirium in The Sandman audio drama) as Amelia Earhart. That actually felt like a call back to Bob’s Burgers where Louise idolized Amelia. I thought it was very clever.
Anyway, I’m liking the show so far.
